GLHL Weekend Recap: Pioneers Claim Regular Season Title

2024-03-26

With their victory Sunday, the Portage Lake Pioneers claimed the GLHL regular season championship and will be the #1 seed in the upcoming GLHL Tournament.

Friday, March 22
Fox Cities Ice Dogs 7, De Pere Deacons 3
A five-goal second period outburst by the Ice Dogs was the difference in their 7-3 victory over the Deacons Friday night at Tri-County Ice Arena. Second period goals for the Ice Dogs came from Nick Janssen, Clint Zumer, Connor Janssen, Reid Pietila, and Alec Elkin which gave the Dogs a 6-2 lead heading into the final period. Each team would add one more goal to the scoresheet before it was all said and done. Drew Chaney made 30 saves in net for the Ice Dogs. For the Deacons, goaltenders Dylan Baker and Jake Jankowski split time between the pipes.

Box Score

Mosinee Papermakers 9, Eagle River Falcons 7
Eagle River tried their best to battle back from a 4-0 first period deficit, but it was too little, too late as the Makers continued to keep the Falcons at arms reach in their 9-7 win. Mosinee received goals from Thomas Christensen, Alex Molski, Jason Mcaloon, and Theran Bauer to take a 4-0 lead. The Falcons got their first tally of the game from Lucas Otto 3:40 into the second period, but Nicholas D'Avolio pushed the Makers lead back to four. The Falcons would score the game's next three goals, cutting into the deficit and making the game just a one score affair. The teams would continue to trade goals back and forth, ending the hopes of any Falcons comeback. Todd Koritzinsky finished with six points for the Falcons (2-4-6), while league point leader Jason Mcaloon would finish with one goal and four assists.

Box Score

Saturday, March 23
Calumet Wolverines 8, De Pere Deacons 2
Paul Sturos scored in each of the three periods, picking up the hat-trick as the Wolverines captured the 8-2 win over De Pere. Sturos started two separate four unanswered goal streaks for the Wolverines as a short Deacons bench had trouble generating any offense. The Deacons only registered 18 shots on gaol, while the buzzing Wolverines put 42 shots on net in the win.

Box Score

Fond du Lac Bears 7, Mosinee Papermakers 6
Dillon Fox got the puck on his stick right in the slot and fired home the overtime game winner to give the Bears a 7-6 victory over Mosinee Saturday night. Tied 4-4 entering the third, Mosinee would take the lead 4:29 into the frame, but Connor Martin's equalizer just 20 seconds later would tie things back up. Just over three minutes later, Anthony Grebe would put the Bears on top for the first time in the game, 6-5, with 12:09 left on the clock. However, Mosinee wouldn't go away and tie things back up four minutes later. The score would remain locked at 6-6 until Fox's winner.

Box Score

Sunday, March 24
Portage Lake Pioneers 10, De Pere Deacons 1
Portage Lake secured the 2023-24 Great Lakes Hockey League regular season championship on Sunday with a 10-1 over De Pere in Portage Lake. The weekend woes for De Pere continued, as the team could only generate two shots on goal in the first, eight in the second, and four in the third period. Matthew Halonen's six-point afternoon (3-3-6) coupled with Brett Hauswirth's and Nick Harris's four-point afternoons helped deliver the game and championship to Portage Lake, who will enter next week's GLHL Tournament as the number one seed.
