Weekend Recap: Five GLHL Teams Pick Up Wins During Busy Weekend

With six games played over three days, it was a busy weekend across the Great Lakes Hockey League.

Friday, December 13
Mosinee Papermakers 8, Calumet Wolverines 0

The Mosinee Papermakers dominated the Calumet Wolverines with an 8-0 victory Friday night at the Calumet Colosseum. Mosinee controlled the game from start to finish, scoring twice in each of the first two periods and adding four more goals in the third. Mitch Filipiak led the way with a hat trick, including two power-play goals, while Greg Hanson had a goal and four assists. Jason McAloon scored twice, and goalie Austin Jensen stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Calumet’s goaltender Bruce Parisot made 33 saves.

Saturday, December 14
Calumet Wolverines 7, M&M Shamrocks 1

The Calumet Wolverines defeated the M&M Shamrocks 7-1 at the Calumet Colosseum on Saturday, powered by Logan Rastello’s hat trick and a strong team effort. Calumet scored twice in the first period, added five goals in the third, and outshot the Shamrocks 41-31. Clifford Jurmu, Matt Yeo, Carson Kariniemi, and Sherman Mowery each contributed goals, while goalie Askal Loukus made 30 saves for a .968 save percentage. Calvin Steinhoff scored the lone goal for M&M on a second-period power play, but the Shamrocks couldn’t keep up with Calumet’s offense.

Portage Lake Pioneers 8, Mosinee Papermakers 5
The Portage Lake Pioneers outlasted the Mosinee Papermakers in a high-scoring affair, earning an 8-5 victory at Dee Stadium on Saturday night. Spencer Donnelly led the Pioneers with a goal and three assists, while Jack Fenton added four assists in a balanced offensive effort. Brett Hauswirth and Cale Markham each scored twice, and Alec Broetzman sealed the win with a late goal. Mosinee’s Jason McAloon shined in the loss, contributing two goals and two assists, but the Papermakers couldn’t overcome Portage Lake’s three-goal surge in the third period. Both teams finished with 35 shots, as Pioneers goaltender Brian Brzezinski made 30 saves for the win.

Eagle River Falcons 4, Fond du Lac Bears 3
The Eagle River Falcons defeated the Fond du Lac Bears 4-3 in a closely contested game at the Eagle River Sports Arena. The Falcons jumped to an early lead with two first-period goals from Alex Racino and Jacob Robinson, while Matt Letmanski scored for the Bears. In the second period, Lucas Otto extended the Falcons’ lead with a power-play goal before Anthony Grebe responded with a power-play goal for the Bears. The third period saw Josh Austin tie the game briefly for the Bears, but Todd Koritzinsky’s power-play goal sealed the win for the Falcons. Both teams had strong goaltending performances, with the Falcons’ Mike Madosh stopping 28 shots and the Bears’ Alex Kruger making 30 saves.

Dane County Dairy Kings 6, Sun Prairie Killer Bees 4
The Dane County Dairy Kings picked up their first league win of the season, defeating the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 6-4. After trailing 1-0 in the first period due to a power-play goal by Anthony Mata, the Dairy Kings outscored Sun Prairie in the second period with goals from Chris Beyer, Roger Schoenike, and Adrien Kreitlow, while Mike Chavez and Wyatt Kniper scored for the Killer Bees. In the third, Schoenike completed his hat trick with two more goals, including an empty-netter, while Alex Koritzinsky also scored for the Dairy Kings. Despite outshooting the Dairy Kings 34-51, the Killer Bees' efforts fell short, with Mata adding another power-play goal. Goalie Max LeClaire made 30 saves for the Dairy Kings, while Davis Nunnally stopped 45 shots for the Killer Bees.
