Weekend Recap: Eight Games in Two Days Across the GLHL

The weekend was filled with GLHL action as both Friday and Saturday eight teams across the league hit the ice for a full weekend of hockey.

Friday, December 5
Fond du Lac Bears 7, Calumet Wolverines 2
Fond du Lac opened the scoring with a goal from Dillion Fox midway through the first, and after Calumet tied the game on a power play, Malachi Buchholz restored the lead with a power-play goal late in the period. The Bears took control in the second with four goals in a seven-minute span—Blake Spies, Matt Letmanski, Buchholz, and Jonas Buchholz all scored to extend the lead to 6–1 before Calumet answered with a late goal from Logan Rastello. Fox added his second of the night early in the third to cap the scoring. Justin Davidson made 26 saves as Fond du Lac outshot Calumet 56–28 in the win.

Portage Lake Pioneers 19, Sun Prairie Killer Bees 0
Portage Lake controlled the game throughout, starting with two goals in the first period from Dylan Farmer and Wyatt Geshel. The Pioneers then put together a decisive nine-goal second period, with Farmer, Gaborik Carlson, Landon Stevens, Nick Harris, Joseph Dancy, Ross Rouleau, Spencer Donnelly, Carlson again, and Dawson McKay all finding the scoresheet during the extended run. The third period brought eight more Portage Lake goals, including two from Connor Raffaelli, a pair from Brett Hauswirth, and additional tallies from Harris, Cody Sivonen, Matt Mantta, and Farmer, who completed his hat trick in the final minutes. Aaron Petrulis stopped all 15 shots he faced for the shutout as Portage Lake finished with a 113–15 shot advantage.

Mosinee Papermakers 11, De Pere Deacons 2
Mosinee opened the scoring with three goals in the first period—Nicholas D’Avolio, Marcus Prondzins, and Eli Robinson all found the net to give the Papermakers an early advantage. The second period broke the game open as Mosinee scored seven times, highlighted by a natural hat trick from Trey Zagrzebski and additional goals from Mitch Filipiak, Max Culp, Tyler McHugh, and Nate Alm. De Pere’s Janne Rukamp put the Deacons on the board midway through the second, then added another in the third, but Mosinee answered with a second goal from Culp to round out their scoring. Ryan Miech stopped 24 shots in the win as Mosinee outshot De Pere 58–26.

Eagle River Falcons 6, M&M Shamrocks 1
Eagle River built a 3–0 lead in the first period with goals from Mike Otto, Zach Kennedy, and Evan Janssen. Alex Racino extended the lead early in the second before Dallas McLaughlin put the Shamrocks on the board midway through the period. The Falcons added two more in the third, with Lucas Otto scoring at 15:02 and Mike Otto adding his second of the night shortly after. Mathias Anderson stopped 22 shots for Eagle River, who held a narrow 24–23 edge in shots.

Saturday, December 6
Portage Lake Pioneers 5, Fond du Lac Bears 4 (OT)

Portage Lake took a 2–1 lead out of the first period after goals from Pete Rouleau and Gaborik Carlson, with Dillion Fox scoring for Fond du Lac to open the game. The Bears responded with a strong second period, getting goals from Matt Letmanski, Fox, and Malachi Buchholz to briefly move in front, but Landon Stevens’ earlier marker kept the game tied 3–3 before Buchholz put Fond du Lac ahead 4–3 entering the third. Alec Broetzman tied the game for the Pioneers at 15:50 of the third, forcing overtime. In the extra frame, Carlson scored his second of the night at 3:33 to give Portage Lake the win. Portage Lake held a 47–30 shot advantage in the matchup.

Calumet Wolverines 12, Sun Prairie Killer Bees 1
Calumet set the tone with a five-goal first period, getting early tallies from Dylan Boberg, Gabe Coppo, Carson Kariniemi, Izaak Avery, and Brent Loukus. The Wolverines added four more in the second, including goals from Liam Pomroy, Matt Frantti, Clifford Jurmu, and a second of the night from Avery to extend the lead. Calumet continued its scoring pace in the third with goals from Sherman Mowery, Coppo, and Garret Parker. Sun Prairie’s lone goal came on a power play from Dakota Stephens midway through the third. Bruce Parisot made 20 saves for Calumet, who outshot Sun Prairie 78–21.

De Pere Deacons 4, Eagle River Falcons 2
De Pere opened the scoring early when Trevor Hilt finished a setup from Ryan Hibert, and the Deacons carried the 1–0 lead into the first intermission. Eagle River tied the game in the second on a goal from Alex Hauswirth, but Michael Stahl answered minutes later to put De Pere back in front before Eric Janssen tied it again late in the period. The Deacons took control in the third with two clutch goals—Hibert scored at 18:22 to break the tie, and Stahl added his second of the night with one second remaining. Jake Jankowski made 41 saves for De Pere, helping the Deacons edge Eagle River in a tight 43–40 shot battle.

M&M Shamrocks 9, Mosinee Papermakers 8 (OT)
Both teams traded momentum throughout a high-scoring first period, with John Cooke opening the scoring for the Shamrocks before Mosinee responded with four straight goals from Trey Zagrzebski, Eli Robinson, Tyler McHugh, and Devon Blaes. The Shamrocks answered quickly with three goals in a two-minute span—Cooke, Marshall Walker, and Tim L’Huillier—to send the game to the intermission tied 4–4. The teams traded single goals in the second, with Ben Hughes scoring for M&M and Blaes adding his second for Mosinee. In the third, both sides scored three times: Blaes completed his hat trick and later added a fourth for Mosinee, while Tim Chamberlain and Wesley Knutson each scored for the Shamrocks before Knutson tied the game at 1:02. In overtime, Cooke buried the winner at 1:55 to secure the Shamrocks’ victory. Both teams finished with nearly even shots, Mosinee at 40 and M&M at 39.
