GLHL Weekend Recap: Pios Claim Regular Season Title

Over the weekend, the Pioneers claimed the regular season title, and the Deacons and Wolverines each won two games.

Friday, February 20
Calumet Wolverines 8, M&M Shamrocks 4

Calumet erased a one-goal first-period deficit with a dominant second frame and pulled away for an 8–4 win Friday night at the Calumet Colosseum. Matt Yeo paced the Wolverines with a hat trick, while Gabe Coppo and Brent Loukus each added a goal and two assists. Sherman Mowery dished out three assists as Calumet outshot M&M 56–24 on the night. Dallas McLaughlin recorded a hat trick for the Shamrocks and was involved in all four goals, but Calumet’s six unanswered goals spanning the second and third periods turned the game decisively in the Wolverines’ favor.

Portage Lake Pioneers 7, Eagle River Falcons 4
Portage Lake broke open a scoreless game with a five-goal second period and held off a third-period push to defeat Eagle River 7–4 at Dee Stadium. Alec Broetzman led the Pioneers with a goal and two assists, while seven different Portage Lake players found the back of the net in a balanced offensive effort. Brett Hauswirth added a goal and an assist, and Aaron Petrulis turned aside 45 shots as the Falcons poured on 53 shots in the contest. Zach Kennedy scored twice for Eagle River, and Mitch Idalski chipped in a goal and an assist, but the Pioneers’ explosive middle frame proved to be the difference.

De Pere Deacons 7, Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6
De Pere built a cushion early and survived a furious third-period rally to escape Appleton with a 7–6 win over the Ice Dogs. The Deacons struck three times in the opening period, including a power-play marker from Janne Rukamp, and extended the lead to 5–2 in the second behind a pair of goals from Sam Thompson. Ryan Hibert added two goals and an assist, while A.J. Butrymowicz, Grady Coppo, and Trevor Hilt each recorded three-point nights in a balanced offensive effort. Fox Cities made it interesting late, scoring four times in the third and pulling within one in the final two minutes. But De Pere held firm down the stretch, weathering the push to secure the high-scoring road victory.

Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8, Sun Prairie Killer Bees 3

Fox Cities flipped the script after an early deficit, exploding for five second-period goals to power past Sun Prairie 8–3 at the Sun Prairie Ice Arena. Trailing 2–0 midway through the first, the Ice Dogs responded with eight of the game’s final nine goals. Jason McAloon recorded a hat trick and added an assist, while Russell Johnson piled up five points on two goals and three helpers. Jacob Lembke chipped in a pair as Fox Cities overwhelmed the Killer Bees with a 74-shot barrage. Sun Prairie received goals from Mike Chavez, Joey Ferraro, and Wyatt Kniper, but the Ice Dogs’ relentless pressure and dominant middle frame turned the game decisively in their favor.

Calumet Wolverines 7, Eagle River Falcons 3
After trading blows in the opening period, Calumet gradually took control and pulled away for a 7–3 win over Eagle River at the Calumet Colosseum. Matt Yeo struck twice in the first to help the Wolverines match the Falcons early, and the game shifted in the middle frame as Logan Rastello and Marc Pmoroy pushed Calumet in front for good. The Wolverines added three more in the third, including a late pair from Brent Loukus and Liam Pomroy to put the finishing touches on the night. Rastello led the way with four points, while Yeo added a goal and an assist. Tyler Hubbard was sharp in net, stopping 51 of 54 shots for Eagle River to finish with a .944 save percentage.

Portage Lake Pioneers 8, M&M Shamrocks 2
Portage Lake put on an offensive showcase Saturday night at Dee Stadium, rolling past M&M 8–2 behind a dominant performance from its top line. Landon Stevens erupted for four goals, scoring twice in the second period to break the game open and adding two more in the third. Dawson McKay followed with a hat trick of his own, as the Pioneers piled up six goals over the final two frames to turn a tight 2–1 game into a rout. Matt Marchel chipped in three assists, while Zach Hill and Alec Broetzman each added two helpers. In net, Aaron Petrulis and Camden Burggrabe combined to make 24 saves on 26 shots. Brennan Mason scored both goals for the Shamrocks. The win coupled with the Bears OT loss secured the regular season championship and the number one seed in the GLHL Tournament for the Pioneers.

De Pere Deacons 4, Fond du Lac Bears 3 (OT)
De Pere weathered a relentless barrage and stunned Fond du Lac with a 4–3 overtime win Saturday night. Outshot 67–36 on the evening, the Deacons leaned heavily on goaltender Dylan Baker, who turned aside 54 shots in regulation to keep the game within reach. Trevor Hilt opened the scoring for De Pere in the first, then delivered again with just 22 seconds left in overtime, finishing a feed from Brett Pansier and Ryan Hibert to seal the victory. Fond du Lac received two goals from Dillion Fox and a third-period power-play strike from Jordan Foster to take a late lead. But Chris Finn tied it midway through the third, and Grady Coppo put De Pere in front with 1:19 remaining to force overtime.
